THE WRITER'S GAZE
Imaginative Empathy / Appropriation
Whose story is it anyway?
Writers have always crossed boundaries, imagining themselves into other lives, other bodies, other identities. But where does imaginative empathy end and appropriation begin? And who decides?
Taking inspiration from Virginia Woolf's idea of the androgynous creative mind and Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze, our third Figmentum Salon turns its attention to the writer's gaze. Is the act of writing an exercise in imaginative freedom, or does it also involve power, possession and the right to represent others?
Can we ever truly see beyond our own experience? Does imagining another person's consciousness give us the authority to speak for them? And is there a difference between giving someone a voice and taking it?
Join us for an evening of provocative ideas, readings and lively conversation as we challenge the boundaries of literary imagination.
Figmentum Salons are intimate gatherings for experienced writers who enjoy questioning conventions, exchanging ideas and exploring literature beyond the familiar.
Numbers are restricted, so please register your interest with Figmentum via email Jean G-Owen at [email protected]
