About this Event
This in-person theater event is for professionals and networking audiences interested in live performance and virtual reality.
The Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley chapters of ACM SIGGRAPH will jointly present Ferryman Collective Theater – “Uncanny Alley: A New Day”, an Emmy-winning theatrical performance in virtual reality, on November 10. The production will take place simultaneously at Clubhouse.la in Los Angeles and Gray Area in San Francisco, with one cast across two stages.
The performance
Ferryman Collective members Whitton Frank (Los Angeles) and Brendan Bradley (San Francisco), who originated their roles, move between improvisation and a scripted, hour-long drama, portraying 15 characters. At each venue, two audience participants join in headsets, fully embodied as characters in the virtual world, where they can say or do anything to influence the story. Seated audiences watch their local performers interact with the parallel stage 350 miles away.
Creative and technical team
- Written and directed by Stephen Butchko
- Virtual world created by Rick Treweek
- Technical direction by Screaming Color
- Artistic direction by Deidre V Lyon
The two-venue architecture was developed by Bradley, building on his Edinburgh Fringe 2024 premiere, which ran on stage, in VR, and via livestream simultaneously.
Audio is powered by RØDE; its equipment connects both venues with ultra-low latency to enable near-real-time improvisation across the distance.
