About this Event
Make a substantial hand-bound journal with a soft faux-leather cover, exposed spine stitching and plenty of pages for writing, drawing and creative projects. Working step-by-step as a group, you’ll focus on making one complete book while learning the essential tools and techniques of bookmaking along the way.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
You’ll be introduced to key bookmaking equipment, including bone folders, awls and book drills, and learn techniques for folding, measuring, piercing, stitching and attaching covers.
Through guided demonstrations, you’ll build your journal from start to finish, learning how the different parts of a book are constructed and brought together. The emphasis is on developing practical skills while making a durable, useful book that you can take away and put to use straight away.
SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS:
This workshop is designed for those new to bookmaking, as well as anyone who has explored it before and would like a structured and supported (re)introduction. No previous experience is needed and all materials are provided.
Bookmaking requires a moderate degree of dexterity, including the use of craft knives, awls, needles and thread, as well as confidence with basic measuring and simple calculations. Due to the use of sharp tools, under-18s and vulnerable adults must be accompanied by a fully?paying responsible adult
Artist Bio:
Hi I'm Zoe Platt, founder of Short & Few, artist educator and graphics practitioner. My education and training background is in graphic design and typography, and over time my practice has become more process-driven, with a hands-on and analogue approach to image-making. Alongside my creative engagement workshops and freelance graphic design practice, I am a qualified art and design tutor in the lifelong learning sector, with close to ten years’ experience teaching a range of subjects across fine art, textiles and graphic communication. I am at my best when I am doing creative things - whether this is making books or prints, or working with others and supporting them to find their best creative selves.
My mission is to: INSPIRE, EMPOWER & ENGAGE
I am a big believer in learning by doing and making mistakes as a form of enquiry, an ethos which underpins my teaching. I love the buzz of seeing what people make when they are in their flow state and seeing where the process is taking them. I want to inspire people to develop a curiosity for what the arts can be about for them, and provide opportunities and learning experiences to get started and keep going.
When attending a workshop you can receive 10% off within the Gallery Shop on the day of your session.
