About the lecture:
In a meritocracy... Blacks would disappear from almost all high-profile positions outside of sports and entertainment" are the words of Nathan Cofnas, the philosopher that commenced the hounding of the late Jason Arday. But how did Cofnas, a philosopher of 'race realism' become so influential? This lecture will explore two routes to our current conjuncture. First, it will unravel the histories of racial science, which sought to prove the intellectual inferiority of Black and other colonies peoples in the 19th and 20th centuries. Secondly, it will explore how contemporary cultures of fascism are utilising these ideas to attack the gains made by anti-racists in the world of education over the last 40 years.
Meet the Speaker
Dr. Adam Elliott-Cooper is a Senior Lecturer in Social and Public Policy in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Queen Mary University of London. He is a leading scholar on state power, race, and resistance, and the author of the critically acclaimed monograph Black Resistance to British Policing.
