The YAO Academy and Symphony Orchestra perform works by Benjamin Britten, Hector Berlioz, Aaron Copland, and Jean Sibelius.Written in 1922 for a Finnish industrial anniversary, Sibelius’ Andante Festivo offers solemn, hymnlike warmth. A decade later, twenty-year-old Britten built his Simple Symphony from eight themes composed during childhood, reshaping youthful sketches into four spirited movements.
Following intermission, The Star-Spangled Banner and Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man honor America’s 250th birthday. Written during World War II at the request of Cincinnati Symphony conductor Eugene Goossens, Copland’s fanfare celebrates courage beyond the battlefield. Ashley Nam then performs the dramatic opening movement of Lalo’s 1870s concerto.
Berlioz’s revolutionary 1830 Symphonie fantastique closes the program. Its final scenes follow an artist to the scaffold and into a grotesque witches’ sabbath, where the ancient Dies irae becomes a terrifying orchestral spectacle.
