Photographic night, parallel realms, ghosts. On looking – and holding breath.
In Jean Cocteau’s seminal post-war film Orphée (1950), there is a beguiling moment when the modern-day Orpheus slides his hand through his own reflection in a full-length mirror. The once impermeable glass becomes liquid, transforming into a fragile portal through which Orpheus enters a parallel world.
This talk reflects on darkness and photography through the lens of Sarah Jones’s artistic practice, exploring photographic night, mirrors, the apparatus, the aesthetics of darkness, altered states, the double and stereoscopy.
Sarah Jones is a British artist based in London and Professor of Photographic Practice at the Royal College of Art. Her photographic work explores the relationships between subject, location and photographer, often using cinematic lighting to create immersive, dreamlike spaces. Her photographs and diptychs examine photographic space, perception and the relationship between images and objects. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Tate, the Centre Pompidou and the Museo Reina Sofía. She is represented by Maureen Paley, London, and Anton Kern Gallery, New York.
