Fallen Upwards:
Here, you don’t rise upwards. You fall. And you don’t fall empty-handed.
Almost everything worth taking from the ground comes along: bodies, animals and plants, old images and symbols, landscapes, memories, fragments of everyday life. Along the way, they rearrange themselves – changing scale and purpose, merging into new bodies, slipping into another time. “Up” is not a geographical place here, but rather a state somewhere between what we already know and what has not yet managed to become reality.
In Nojus Petrauskas’ paintings, old painting traditions function almost like genetic material, giving rise to grotesque bodies, strange processions and fantastical creatures. In Danielius Rusys’ work, dreams, memories, texts and everyday experiences come together through a logic of improvisation; a work by Saulė Rusytė is shown alongside his. In Gediminas Endriekus’ sculptures, evolution seems to have briefly forgotten its own rules – human, animal and plant features grow together into species we have not yet had time to name. In Juozas Sidaravičius’ world, history, fantasy, absurdity and humour operate side by side, while clouds move out of the background and become something close to inhabitable territory.
Fortunately, the journey goes both ways. The artists cross the boundary and return with loot – a new body, a displaced symbol, an unfamiliar creature, or a world that did not exist a moment ago. It is probably better not to linger up there. What matters is what you manage to bring back.
