About this Event

This training session provides an introduction to harm reduction approaches within substance use and support services, exploring the principles, evidence base, and practical application of harm reduction in frontline practice.

The session examines what harm reduction is, why it is an essential component of modern substance use support, and how it promotes safety, dignity, and engagement for individuals who use substances. Participants will develop an understanding of harm reduction as a pragmatic, person-centred approach that seeks to reduce drug-related harm rather than requiring abstinence as a precondition for support.

A strong focus is placed on delivering effective harm reduction advice and interventions, including identifying risk, reducing overdose potential, safer substance use practices, and supporting informed decision-making. The training moves beyond theory, incorporating practical examples of harm reduction activity used in real-world settings.

Through interactive discussion and applied learning, participants will explore how to:

· Integrate harm reduction conversations into everyday client contact

· Deliver clear, non-judgemental harm reduction advice

· Recognise opportunities for brief harm reduction interventions

· Develop and facilitate harm reduction-focused sessions and group work

· Increase engagement with individuals who may not be ready or able to pursue abstinence

Practical elements throughout the session are designed to increase confidence, awareness, and competence in creating and delivering harm reduction-focused interventions, enabling staff to embed safer practice principles across their work.

The training is suitable for frontline workers, support staff, managers, and professionals working with individuals affected by substance use.
