What happens when Filipino artists stop explaining themselves?
The Filipino diaspora is often expected to translate itself, to explain its humour, soften its contradictions, package its culture, and make itself legible to the country it lives in. 🌍
No Need to Export refuses that demand. ❌
Bringing together Filipino artists based in Belgium, the exhibition looks at the things we carry, keep, inherit, question, and sometimes refuse to translate. Across different practices and perspectives, the works hold memory, labour, faith, care, humour, desire, class, migration, and contradiction without simplifying them for an outside gaze. 👀
The exhibition asks what happens when Filipino culture is not performed as hospitality, decoration, gratitude, nostalgia, or proof of integration. ✈️
Here, not everything has to be explained. 🤐
Not everything has to be beautiful, useful, familiar, or easy to consume. Some things remain coded, intimate, awkward, funny, devotional, bitter, sentimental, excessive, or strange. Some things speak first to those who already know. 😄
Rather than presenting Filipino identity as something to be exported, translated, or made palatable, No Need to Export turns its attention to what Filipino artists keep for themselves and for each other, and to what becomes possible when meaning is allowed to remain partly untranslated. 📝
Come for the vernissage on 18 October from 2 PM to 6 PM, meet the artists, and spend an afternoon with BeLikha and the Filipino creative community in Belgium. 🎨
Free and open to everyone. 🥳
