Class Description
Experimental Screen Printing: Photography, Archives, Materials & Sculptural Print is a hands-on five-week course exploring screen printing as an experimental process for transforming photographic archives, found materials, and personal imagery into prints and sculptural works.
Participants will learn the foundations of screen printing while developing images from photographic archives, found photographs, historical imagery, and their own photographs. Rather than limiting screen printing to traditional editioned prints, the course will encourage participants to think of the printed image as a material that can be layered, altered, folded, assembled, and transformed into three-dimensional forms.
The printed works will ultimately move between two- and three-dimensional forms. Participants will have opportunities to transform their prints into artist books, sculptural books, mobiles, hanging works, assemblages, and other paper or mixed-media structures.
The materials fee for this class is $85. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts Venmo.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will experiment with hand painting, chine-collé, stencils, shapes, textures, photographic imagery, layering, monoprinting, and intentional registration and misregistration.
- We will experiment with printing and transferring imagery onto found wood, textiles, ceramics, and other materials, considering how the history and physical qualities of each surface can contribute to the meaning of the image.
- Participants will explore making inks and pigments from found materials, including soils and natural pigments, and investigate how locally sourced materials can become part of the printing process.
- We will also experiment with toning, staining, and altering paper to create surfaces that respond to and become part of the printed image.
Instructor - Priyanka Kumar
Priyanka Kumar is an interdisciplinary artist, photographer, printmaker, and educator based in the United States. She holds an MFA in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design, where she worked as a Teaching Assistant and Graduate Instructor in the Printmaking Department.
Her practice moves between photography, printmaking, papermaking, and artist books, with a particular interest in transforming photographic images through experimental print processes. She works across monoprint, intaglio, photogravure, screen printing, image transfer, cyanotype, and other mixed-media techniques.
Kumar's teaching practice focuses on experimentation, material exploration, and expanding the possibilities of photographic imagery through printmaking. She encourages students to move beyond reproducing photographs and instead explore how images can be transferred, fragmented, layered, altered, and reimagined through different printing processes.
With a background in law, museum studies, photography, and fine art, Kumar brings a research-driven and interdisciplinary approach to teaching. She has experience teaching university and community-based workshops and is particularly interested in creating accessible, hands-on learning environments where participants can develop their own visual language through experimentation.
