EVERYTHING THAT DOESN'T FIT — Ioana Tocoaie
Solo exhibition curated by Liviana Dan
Opening Thursday, November 5, from 7 PM, at Himera, ISHO U1, Timișoara.
We're getting ready for a new opening at Himera, and this time we're welcoming Ioana Tocoaie with her solo exhibition, Everything That Doesn't Fit.
Expect saturated colours, oversized plants, enormous birds, unusual objects and familiar forms that gradually dissolve into lines.
Curated by Liviana Dan, the exhibition moves between seduction and distance, between the figurative and the abstract, returning to the question of beauty and the act of looking at painting itself.
A little more about the exhibition, in Liviana Dan's words:
‘…poisonous red mushrooms with white spots beside the Madonna and Child, a radiant blue sky, often pink backgrounds, orange animals, normally delicate plants rendered oversized emerging from the isolation of the painting, enormous birds lined up along the branches of cypress trees, insects as big as houses, and elegant objects as small as a green planet…
The colours are saturated, the subjects immediately recognisable, the forms beginning to dissolve into lines. The result is a buffer between seduction and distance. Plants, insects, people remain plants-insects-people, but at a scale of two metres, Ioana Tocoaie is more than explicit about what she is trying to do and what she is not.
Attentive to colour, surface, and the relationship between lines, Ioana Tocoaie resists social commentary, utopian narratives, and personal stories. There are no dramatic revelations lurking behind the yellow petals. Sometimes a body is a body, a flower is a flower, and a mountain is a mountain. And all are points of reference for content, while the painting acts on its own, causing quite a few problems. Motifs are expanded, flattened, reconfigured. Coloured traces, held in check by Ioana Tocoaie, lead to the gradual dissolution of the motif. What initially appears idyllic, ordinary, resists ambiguous interpretations.
The tension is subtle and persistent. The figurative slips into the abstract, the edges of the drawing give way to painting. Ioana Tocoaie brings the balance between the fundamental elements of painting to the foreground. Ioana Tocoaie knows the promises and failures of modernity. Her approach nevertheless remains poetic. She offers no answers and suspends possibilities that arrive too quickly. A new aesthetic conceived in romantic terms, in fusion with nature and with beauty. Indifference is eliminated. The smooth surface allows the image to speak directly.
The painting itself appears as a container for messages of the living-colors and living-energy kind. Ioana Tocoaie undergoes a process of refinement in order to return once again to the question of beauty. Reality seems uncertain; in fact, it remains so, just enough to keep things intriguing. Ioana Tocoaie takes side roads, drawing on a moral longing for this category called beauty. Relative isolation is, in fact, what happens when the act of looking at a painting alone becomes a subject in itself.’
