Step into the story of New York through the people, places, and events that shaped the city's African American experience from the earliest days of Dutch New Amsterdam to the present. Beginning at Bowling Green, this guided walking tour follows the evolution of Lower Manhattan through historic streets, public spaces, and landmarks that reveal the enduring impact of slavery, freedom, resistance, commerce, immigration, and civic change.
Along the way, participants examine how laws, culture, economics, and everyday life transformed New York over more than four centuries while exploring the often-overlooked stories of the individuals and communities who helped shape the city. Through descendant-centered storytelling, historical maps, primary sources, and thought-provoking discussion, participants are encouraged to see familiar places through a new lens.
