🇦🇺 I’m fundraising to help raise awareness of child exploitation and child sexual abuse — a cause that is deeply personal to me.I know firsthand that the impact of what happens to a child can reach far beyond childhood. It can affect a person’s life in ways that aren’t always visible, which is why I am so passionate about protecting children and helping create a world where children are safer, heard and believed.
As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, this cause is deeply personal to me. I am passionate about protecting our children and using my voice to help create greater awareness.
I cannot change what happened to me, but I can use my voice and my experience to help raise awareness, challenge the silence surrounding child exploitation and encourage adults to become more informed about the risks facing children.
The statistics are confronting.
About 1 in 4 Australians report experiencing sexual abuse during childhood.
The Australian Child Maltreatment Study found that 28.5% of Australians aged 16 and over experienced child sexual abuse — roughly 1 in every 3.5 people.
Behind those statistics are real children, real families and lifelong impacts.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, approximately 1.45 million Australian adults reported experiencing sexual abuse before the age of 15.
This included approximately:
* 1.1 million women (11%)
* 343,500 men (3.6%)
The overwhelming majority knew the person responsible:
* 88% of women who experienced childhood sexual abuse knew the perpetrator of their first incident.
* 82% of men who experienced childhood sexual abuse knew the perpetrator of their first incident.
For many survivors, the abuse wasn’t a single incident either. The ABS found that 69% of women who experienced childhood sexual abuse experienced more than one incident.
For men, 32% reported that their first incident was perpetrated by a family member, and 82% knew the perpetrator.
These numbers tell us something we cannot ignore:
Child sexual abuse is far more likely to be perpetrated by someone the child knows than by a stranger.
That is why awareness matters.
I am fundraising to help shine a light on child exploitation and sexual abuse, challenge the silence and create greater awareness around the realities children face.
To raise funds and awareness, I will be taking on a challenge that is both physical and deeply meaningful to me — walking approximately 85 kilometres from Coffs Harbour to Grafton. 🚶♀️💙
For me, this walk represents more than kilometres. Every step is a reminder of why I am doing this — for the children who deserve to be protected, for the survivors who continue to carry the impact of what happened to them, and for the importance of speaking up.
Our children deserve better.
Every child deserves to feel safe. Every child deserves to be believed. And every child deserves adults who are willing to speak up, educate themselves and take action.
