While on assignment in Russia in March 2023, Gershkovich was charged with espionage and imprisoned in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo Prison. Throughout his detention, Gershkovich continued to report and document the Russian prison system while awaiting a fate decided at the highest levels of government.
📚In “This Cursed Beautiful Land,” Gershkovich recounts his arrest, his imprisonment, and the historic prisoner exchange that secured his freedom—with the aim of developing an understanding for himself and explaining to the outside world a country that remains an enigma.
💬In conversation with Joshua Yaffa (Bard College Berlin), who reported on Russia for "The New Yorker" for many years, he will discuss the harrowing details and important lessons from his own story.
🙏This event is part of our Amerikahaus Book Talks series. It is also part of “Writing Democracy,” a joint project of Bard College Berlin and the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, as well as part of the Munich Dialogues on Democracy lecture series, a collaboration between the Yale Club of Germany e.V.
