About this Event
To begin our series of public programmes to complement our major temporary exhibition on the work and legacy of Donald Towner (1903 - 1985) we will be looking at his fellow artists and friends. Towner and Eric Ravilious (1903 - 1942) attended art school together in Eastbourne and spent many weeks together on painting trips. In this talk, Dr. Ella Ravilious, Curator: Architecture and Design at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London explores grandfather’s artistic career. Her talk will uncover Ravilious’s relationship with the Victoria and Albert Museum. Eric Ravilious was a designer, painter, printmaker, and illustrator, best known for his war work and depictions of landscape, particularly the South Downs in Sussex. His unique style grew from his training as a designer at the Royal College of Art, which, in that era, was based at the V&A buildings. Eric drew deeply from the V&A’s collections throughout the rest of his career, particularly from 18th and 19th century watercolourists such as Francis Towne and John Sell Cotman, and the wood engraver Thomas Bewick. This talk will attempt to retrace his footsteps through the riches of the V&A.
