Engaging with Audiences: How to Maximise Your Impact

Analyse the interactions between presenter and audience, and learn tools to optimise the impact that you can have when giving talks.
About this Event

This event will start with Professor Lloyd Peck, a leading polar marine biologist and a Wolfson College Fellow, giving a presentation of some of his work. Participants will analyse this presentation for content, structure, and audiovisual ways of presenting information. They will also analyse the interaction between the presenter and the audience, paying particular attention to how engaging the audience can be as important, if not more, than the content itself.

We will then explore the ways in which impact is made with the audience and examine the range of tools available to achieve this. The second part of the masterclass will provide interested participants with the opportunity to deliver short presentations of their own, and practice the skills identified in the first half of the event.

Workshop Facilitator

is an Emeritus Fellow of Wolfson College and an Antarctic biologist with over 40 years' experience. He has published over 400 science papers, books, book chapters and reviews.

Professor Peck has supervised 56 successful PhD students, and supervised or mentored many more Master's students. He discovered the relationship between gigantism and low-temperature marine gigantism, and the link between ultraslow development rates in polar marine species and problems making proteins. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Institution and the Royal Society for Biology. He has given over 50 keynote addresses, invited talks and departmental seminars, including the Royal Institution Christmas lectures on Channel 4 television in 2004.
