enCHANTed rootsWhere does choral music begin? This programme traces some of its deepest roots back to the ancient tradition of chant – music shaped by the human voice, by sacred words, and by the natural rise and fall of a single melodic line.
Beginning with the extraordinary music of Hildegard of Bingen, we travel through the rich polyphony of Brumel, Tallis, Byrd, Victoria and Gesualdo, hearing how those early melodic roots gradually grow into increasingly complex and expressive choral textures.
The journey then continues into later centuries, through Bruckner, Grieg, Rachmaninoff, Duruflé and Vaughan Williams, and into the music of our own time. In works by Nystedt, Tavener, MacMillan, Mealor and Briggs, echoes of those ancient traditions remain – sometimes clearly heard, sometimes transformed almost beyond recognition.
enCHANTed roots invites us to listen across the centuries and discover how composers continually return to the same fundamental source: the expressive possibilities of the unaccompanied human voice.
