The SSO opens its 22nd Season with Enchanted Landscapes—a programme filled with magic, lyricism, and musical defiance.
Carl Maria von Weber’s Overture to Oberon is famed for its fairy-tale opening in which a solo horn plays the enchanting three-note leitmotif for Oberon’s magic horn. As in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Oberon, King of the Fairies, has a disastrous disagreement with his fairy-queen, Titania. In his 1826 romantic opera, Oberon, Weber changes the disagreement to a magical wager. Oberon vows to reconcile with Titania only if Puck can find a human couple who remains faithful through all temptations. The perilous, middle-eastern journey that ensues, facilitates Weber’s beguiling music.
The SSO’s Principal Flute, Laurel Swinden, is the featured soloist in Carl Reinecke's Flute Concerto in D Major. Composed in 1908, this concerto stands as a entrancing, defiant, and unapologetic time-capsule of the late-Romantic musical landscape. Today, it remains one of the most cherished, lyrical, and frequently performed Romantic concertos for the instrument.
Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 is famous for defying orthodox symphonic form. Radically ahead of his time, Schumann omits the traditional breaks between movements. This unbroken structure creates a powerful illusion of a single, continuous, and highly immersive journey, in which the separate parts of the symphony bleed into one another to tell one continuous emotional story.
