In collaboration with MFA Boston Center for Netherlandish ArtAmsterdam of the 1600s was a rich, multicultural city—both a trade hub and refuge to persecuted groups, including a large Jewish population. Although Protestant artists like Rembrandt van Rijn lived in proximity to people of different faiths from all over the world, their work could exoticize or stereotype these new neighbors. Scholars Nazanin Hedayat Munroe, Michele Frederick, and Michael Zell help us navigate this complex historical and visual landscape.
