About this Event
The Sanctuary Studio welcomes two of Southern California’s most exciting young jazz musicians, pianist Emmet Althoen and saxophonist Kahlil Childs, for an intimate duo performance exploring the rich possibilities of piano and saxophone.
At just 15 years old, Emmet Althoen has already developed a musical voice of remarkable maturity. A member of the Orange County School of the Arts’ prestigious Ambassador Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Dr. John Reynolds, Emmet is a gifted pianist, improviser, and emerging composer. Having studied with acclaimed pianist Jeremy Siskind, his playing combines technical command with sensitivity, lyricism, and a deep appreciation for the jazz tradition.
San Diego–based alto saxophonist and composer Kahlil Childs is quickly establishing himself as an exceptional voice of his generation. A student of legendary saxophonist Charles McPherson and collaborator with Grammy Award–winning musician and producer Kamau Kenyatta, Kahlil has performed alongside artists including Christian Sands, Ambrose Akinmusire, Sullivan Fortner, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Rufus Reid.
His accomplishments include two consecutive selections to the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, recognition as Outstanding Alto Saxophonist at the 2026 Essentially Ellington Competition, a 2026 YoungArts Award, and membership in Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz. His performances have taken him from Carnegie Hall and SFJAZZ to major festivals and concert halls across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Together, Emmet and Kahlil bring youthful imagination to a musical tradition they already understand with extraordinary depth. In the intimate setting of The Sanctuary Studio, this duo performance offers a rare opportunity to hear two remarkable emerging artists in close musical conversation—spontaneous, expressive, and rooted in a shared love of jazz.
