Los Angeles band Wednesday Week returns to play a handful of East coast dates, including a stop at Sally O’Brien’s in Somerville, MA, on Wednesday, November 11 with Emily Grogan Band and the Zip Ups. Sisters Kristi Callan (guitar, vocals) and Kelly Callan (drums) and Heidi Rodewald (bass) are supporting their new four-song covers EP on Label 51 Recordings, produced by Don Dixon, who also produced their 1987 Enigma album What We Had. With songs by the Zeros, Sandie Shaw, Color Me Gone, and Dolly Mixture that were regulars in their 1980s live shows, the orange EP single is a must-have.
Named after the Undertones song, Wednesday Week emerged in early-’80s L.A. alongside the Paisley Underground, appearing on The Radio Tokyo Tapes and WarfRat Tales before the Betsy’s House EP (WarfRat, 1983, produced by Vitus Mataré) and What We Had. After No Going Back (Sweden Spins, 1990, produced by Earle Mankey) the lineup scattered: Rodewald later earned a Tony nomination for Passing Strange; Kristi worked with David Gray and Dave Davies; and Kelly toured the world reviewing motorcycles and played with the Mistaken and dragsterbarbie. The classic core is back together on the East coast for the first time since 1987.
Emily Grogan Band:
From starring in the prime-time Canadian television series "Rocker Moms", composing a song for Sony Pictures, being nominated Best Female Vocalist for the Boston Music Awards, to being a multi- instrumentalist in a myriad of bands, Emily Grogan is the quintessential renaissance woman whose passion and creativity is conveyed via her full-spectrum musicianship like no other. A classically-trained pianist, punk rock drummer, reggae saxophonist and guitarist/singer songwriter,
Emily's performed both nationally and internationally and has written and released over 40
songs to critical acclaim. The Boston Herald says, "Emily Grogan may well turn out to be the next big thing
out of Boston's music scene..."
The Zip-Ups are a Boston based indie pop/rock band that has been called "jangle-delic" and "would fit in with late 60s or 70s bands."
