EMET Conference – Rural & Remote Emergency Care

Join us for a hands-on experience in building your emergency medicine knowledge and skills. This in-person event will take place at the Anne O'Byrne Education Centre, Level 1, tunapri mapali, 39 Frankland Street, Launceston General Hospital, Launceston.

The workshop will commence at 9:00am on Friday November 27, 2026 (registration open from 8:30am) and conclude at 4:00pm on Saturday November 28, 2026.

Topics to be covered over the two days include:

• BLS / ALS training
• Emergency dentistry
• Obstetric emergencies
• Ultrasound skills
• Simulation stations
• Procedural sedation and analgesia workshop
• Toxinology challenge

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided on both days.

A networking event (food provided) will be held on Friday evening at 5:00pm. The cost of the networking event is included in your ticket; however, confirmation of attendance will be required.

Be ready to learn from our Department of Emergency Medicine teams from the Launceston General Hospital, North West Regional Hospital and the Royal Hobart Hospital, as well as clinicians from the Tasmanian Retrieval Service. Come prepared to participate in interactive workshops and connect with fellow professionals.

EMET is an Australian College for Emergency Medicine program, and provides education, training and supervision to doctors and other health professionals working in emergency departments and emergency care services who are not specifically trained in emergency medical care. Demonstrate proficiency in delivering Basic & Advanced Life Support

Info: Describe common types of dental trauma.
Describe and demonstrate performance of dental local anaesthaesia.
Demonstrate procedural skills for the management of dental trauma including avulsions, fractures and splinting.

Info: Describe the principles of managing precipitous labour and delivery in rural/remote settings.
Demonstrate the management of precipitous vaginal delivery and its complications.
Demonstrate the assessment of a neonate and describe principles of neonatal resuscitation.

Info: Describe the use of ultrasound in critically unwell patients in rural general practice for both trauma and non-trauma settings.
Demonstrate the use of ultrasound for the following indications: -
Assessment of shocked patient,
Assessment of patient with respiratory failure,
Assessment of chest and abdominal trauma,
Ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous access

Info: Identify the challenges of assessing and managing unwell patients in rural and remote Tasmania.
Outline pitfalls and potential solutions for supporting improved care of patients in rural/remote general practice in Tasmania.
Describe opportunities for improvements to systems and processes that will result in better care for acutely unwell patients in rural/remote general practice in Tasmania.

Info: Simulation stations:
Demonstrate competency in the assessment and management of deteriorating or critically unwell patients, including: Assess and recognise signs of threatened or obstructed airway,
Demonstrate safe approach to basic and advanced airway management.
Demonstrate assessment and management of patients with acute respiratory failure including the use of various oxygen delivery devices,
Demonstrate assessment and management of patients with acute circulatory failure in both trauma and non-trauma settings,
Demonstrate assessment and management of patients with reduced conscious state including severe head injury

Info: Describe and discriminate between safe and effective approaches to analgesia and procedural sedation that could be used in rural/remote clinical settings.
Outline risks and pitalls associated with performing procedural sedation and analgesia in rural/remote settings.
Describe alternatives to procedural sedation relevant to rural/remote settings in Tasmania

Info: Describe the assessment and management of patients with common toxicological and toxinological patients that may be encountered in rural/remote Tasmania.
Demonstrate effective initial management of patients suffering acute envenomation.
