Consent education has been inexistent in Sex Ed for a long time and it's taking some time as a society to catch up. Contrary to what some people tend to think, Consent is not easy because a lot of people have learned to overstep their boundaries, some believe that saying no is a bad thing, some people do not understand coercion...
A lot of people understand consent as a gate, as someone giving someone else access to their body. Someone asks, someone says yes or no, and the job is done.
But consent is far more alive than that and it is more than a transactional approach, it's a co-creation made between 2 sovereign beings. It's also noticing the difference between willing and tolerating. It's being able to say no without over-explaining, and to hear no without taking it as an attack. It's something you feel in your body, not just a word you say or just a thought process you have.
Embodied Consent is a 3-hour interactive workshop where we explore Consent through the lens of embodiment and Betty Martin's wheel of Consent. You'll leave with a clearer sense of your own yes and no, and practical language you can use in your relationships, friendships, and intimate life.
What we'll explore:
- The different meanings attributed to Consent and different approaches to Consent.
- What Embodied Consent is.
- What makes giving and receiving a no challenging, and how to make it easier on both sides.
- The Wheel of Consent. A powerful framework developed by Dr Betty Martin for understanding who a touch is for, and practising asking for what you want.
What to expect in the room:
You'll learn through teachings, reflections, and guided practices. All partner practices involve hand-to-hand touch only, fully clothed, and every practice is optional. You're welcome to observe or sit out at any point, because that's consent too.
No experience needed. Come on your own, with a friend, or with a partner.
I foster spaces where the language I use is intentionally aiming to be inclusive, non-heteronormative and non-mono-normative.
This workshop is for you if:
- You find yourself saying yes when you mean maybe, or no
- You're not always sure what you actually want
- You want to feel more confident asking for what you want
- You identify as a people pleaser
- You care about consent and want to go deeper than the basics
This is a 18+ event. I believe that Consent should be taught to children and teenagers too and requires a relevant and age appropriate approach and language. The content of this specific workshop was designed specifically for adults only.
About your facilitator
I'm Velvet Lilith, a Certified Somatic Sexologist, intimacy and relationships coach, and Sex educator.
Like many adults, I grew up without real consent education, and without anyone teaching me how to ask for what I wanted. I learned through mistakes, through experience, and eventually through training. Everything I teach comes from all three.
I teach consent as something embodied and created together, not a box to tick. If you say yes when you mean maybe, or go quiet about what you want because asking feels selfish or unfamiliar, that's not a flaw in you but likely the result of not being given the relevant tools.
My work is about handing adults those tools, so you can recognise your yes and your no, ask for what you want, and build relationships that feel honest, connected and respectful of one’s and others’ sovereignty.
