(2025, Italy/US, 90 min) dir Valerio Ciriaci, w/ Elvira Notari, Flavia Amabile, Giuliana Bruno.Elvira Notari directed over 60 feature films and hundreds of shorts and documentaries between 1906 and 1930. The founder of Dora Film in Southern Italy, Notari made sensational melodramas adapted from popular Neapolitan music and folklore. Her films capture the beating heart of the city and its people, telling tales of forbidden romance, class exploitation, and populist uprising–artfully framed with on-location shooting and colorful tinting and toning. Tragically, only three of her features and a handful of shorts and fragments survive, but this fascinating documentary helps resurrect Notari’s crucial life work, featuring extensive footage and interviews with archivists and historians.
If you enjoy this screening, visit https://archivesonscreen.org/ to learn more about a cine-concert of ‘A Santanotte (1922), one of only three surviving features by Notari. Archives on Screen and the Italian Cultural Center will present ‘A Santanotte with a live mandolin score at the Main Cinema on February 3rd.
