How does a man winter?Over the past several weeks, our conversations in the Odd Men’s Group here in Hood River have explored masculinity, relationships, work, work and our relationship with the natural world.
One thing that continues to emerge is the importance of making room for questions that don’t necessarily have easy answers and some without answers at all. Questions that ask something of us rather than simply offering something to resolve.
As autumn gives way to winter here in the Gorge, I’ve been thinking about what the changing season asks of us psychologically.
We live in a culture that places enormous value on activity, productivity, and forward movement. Winter offers something different: darkness, stillness, withdrawal, and the possibility that something meaningful may be taking shape beneath the surface.
What might happen if we approached winter not as something to endure or overcome, but as a season with its own wisdom?
On Saturday, December 5, I’ll be hosting Elements of the Gorge: Winter, a half-day retreat for men at Trout Lake Abbey.
The gathering will include conversation inside and outside around the fire, time outdoors, and guided reflection. We’ll explore the tensions between light and darkness, activity and rest, solitude and connection, and what these opposites might reveal about our own lives.
This retreat grows out of some of the same questions that have shaped the Odd Men’s Group, while welcoming other men interested in this kind of work.

Advance registration is required. Participation is limited to ten men.
Registration is $125 through October 31, $150 thereafter, and $100 for current Odd Men’s Group members.
