Join us for an unforgettable evening of flamenco at El Rincón Flamenco, an intimate space in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District.
This special evening, presented by Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco, features guest bailaora, La Rhina Motohkaw, a dynamic flamenco dancer with nearly 30 years of experience performing across Spain, Japan, and the U.S.
Born in Japan and raised in the U.S., Rhina has danced in some of flamenco’s most revered venues—including Festival de Jerez, Peña Torres Macarena, and Casabermeja—earning accolades such as first prize at the Concurso de Baile por Bulerías in Utrera, one of flamenco's most historic towns.
Artistic Director Carola Zertuche will also take the stage, joined by guitarist David McLean and flamenco singer Roberto Zamora.

Rhina's BIO
Born in Japan and having moved to the US at a young age, Rhina began studying flamenco
almost 30 years ago in Atlanta, GA, where she was living at the time. Since 2013, she has been active in various flamenco strongholds, including Seville and Jerez, Spain, performing in peñas,
Ferias, private fiestas, festivals, and theaters. Over the years, her teaching career and performance opportunities have expanded beyond the US and Spain to Japan, France, Singapore, and more. Highlights of her recent work include the 45th Festival Flamenco de Caceres (2019), Peñas de Guardia series (2020), and both the Festival de Jerez and XXX Palma de Plata “Ciudad de Algeciras” (2022). Other notable work includes dancing in the opera Carmen, directed by internationally acclaimed maestro Seiji Ozawa, in five major cities in Japan, under the direction of New York–based choreographer Sara Erde and New York Metropolitan Opera stage director David Kneuss.
Some highlights of Rhina’s activities:
Highlights of her most recent work in Spain include: the 52nd Festival de Cante en Casabermeja (2023) with el Rancapino Chico amongst others, XXX Palma de Plata “Ciudad de Algeciras” with Luis de Mateo and Jose de Pura (2022), and Festival de Jerez in La Peña Buleria with Jose
Pañero and Remedio Reyes (2020). She now frequently appears in the Peña Torres Macarena,
Seville’s most prestigious and the oldest flamenco association. In September 2021, Rhina won the first place in the dance competition in Utrera (Concurso de Baile por Bulerías Ciudad de Utrera), a town considered as one of the cradles of flamenco.
In November 2016, she participated in a television program “Foro Flamenco” on Canal Sur to support an internationally recognized singer/dancer “festero” Javier Heredia and to celebrate flamenco as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity recognized by UNESCO.
Other related work includes the opera Carmen by Seiji Ozawa, an internationally recognized maestro. Rhina was contracted twice (2017 and 2019) as one of 6 dancers under the directions of New York based choreographer, Sara Erde and New York Metropolitan Opera Stage director, David Kneuss. She toured 5 major cities in Japan with the company.
