Synopsis
Peru, 1618. Jerónimo de Ávila, the mestizo son of a Spanish conquistador and an Indigenous noblewoman, returns from years of war in Europe determined to prove his legitimacy and recover his name and inheritance. In Lima, his search draws him into conspiracies and places him in conflict with both colonial justice and the ecclesiastical authorities.
His destiny crosses with that of Inés Vargas de Carvajal, a young novice hiding a forbidden passion for poetry. Pursued by a powerful Jesuit determined to bring them before the church tribunal, Jerónimo and Inés are forced to flee together, searching for freedom in a society shaped by prejudice, repression and violence.
Directed by Augusto Tamayo San Román and starring Diego Bertie, Jimena Lindo and Orlando Sacha, El bien esquivo was selected as Peru’s submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002. The film also received the Critics’ First Prize at the Lima Film Festival and awards for direction and cinematography on the international festival circuit.
