About this Event
Across cultures and centuries, plants have shaped how people record, preserve, and share ideas. Birch bark and palm leaves became manuscript pages; leaves of the sacred Bodhi tree carried Buddhist texts and images; sea-grape leaves traveled through the mail as postcards; and cotton and pine became an important source of paper.
Dr. Yulia Mylnikova, Director of the Eide Library, and Lee Amos, Director of Land Management and Environmental Programs, will bring the Library and Preserve into conversation through objects from the collection—including a birch-bark manuscript—and living plants found on the Center’s grounds.
This 45-minute talk will take place in the lecture hall of the Eide Library and Research Center, followed by 15 minutes of Q&A.

EXHIBIT
The doors will open one hour early, at 5:30 PM, for anyone who wants to explore our current exhbit - Discover Elling Eide and the Eide Library Through the Arts. This exhibition shines a spotlight on Mr. Elling Eide and the art collection he assembled over many years. The exhibition brings together works from China, Japan, and Iran that Elling acquired during his travels, at auction houses, and through his personal connections with artists. It also presents archival materials documenting his research and several works of art only recently rediscovered in the old Eide family home. Together, they reveal Elling as a scholar, traveler, horticulturist, and collector and illuminate the intellectual world from which his remarkable library grew.
A separate eventbrite event page is available for this 5:30 exhibit access. Please do not register for both. Your registration here is sufficient.
