About this Event
Most of us eat Malaysian food without realising how much it has to tell. Every dish carries so much - Chinese immigration, formation of Peranakan culture, Indian trade, Malay cooking. At times these influences contradict each other - discovering stories behind each dish and connecting with others makes eating so much more enjoyable
This is not a lecture or a food tour; it is a dinner where we’ll eat together and talk about why we eat what we eat. I’ll guide the evening, but veryone is invited to taste, react, ask questions, and share their own stories.
Most exciting part - chef Khoon from Malacca straits restaurant will come out and tell us in his own words how this food made its way to Australia. What else will happen on the night:
- Hand-picked menu by chef Khoon - the dishes he chose to represent Malaysia and Singapore
- Several courses across the country's major influences: Indian, Chinese noodle culture, Peranakan identity, Malay desserts
- The raw ingredients passed around to smell and handle: belacan (shrimp paste), galangal, tamarind and more. We'll understand the nuts and bolts of the cuisine
- Sneak peek behind the scenes - we will look into the kitchen, see some wok hei magic, and more
- A history card and menu signed by the chef to take home for memories
You can get a feel for what we'll be eating and discussing on my instagram page below:

You don't need to know anything about Malaysian or Singaporean food. First time or grew up on it, the point is the same: good food, good company, and the stories behind the dishes. Coming alone is very welcome.
- Group size: 6-8 people
- Duration: Around 2 hours
- Cost: everyone pays for their own food and drinks, likely around $40-45 per person; 5 AUD ticket is the initial commitment - contributes to the final bill
- The exact dishes will be shared several days before the event. We'll be sharing dishes as a group, which is central to the experience. Food is mainly seafood, so it might be hard to accomodate other dietary restrictions.
Come join for an exciting dinner full of stories and good food!
