Coyote Little
“Eat The Elite”
Every art community has its quiet lines: who gets in, who gets left out, and who gets to decide. This October, Coyote Little draws a new line.
EAT THE ELITE is a month-long exhibition taking on gatekeeping, cliques, and the unwritten rules that tell artists they’re not connected enough, established enough, wealthy enough, or simply enough. It asks a sharper question: What happens when they make the work anyway?
EAT THE ELITE brings together new work by Tonya Van Parys, Coyote Little co-owner, curator, and multidisciplinary artist, and Jillian Shannon, an Australian designer and artist based in Joshua Tree.
Van Parys has spent 25 years as a professional artist, working across painting, photography, illustration, tattooing, and other mediums. Her work in EAT THE ELITE confronts the barriers of the art world head on, combining dynamic color, bold symbolism, commercial imagery, and text with a practice built around individuality and the belief that art should be accessible to everyone. Coyotes, skulls, barbed wire, and the language of commerce become a visual vocabulary for challenging exposure culture, exclusion, and the systems that decide whose work gets seen.
Shannon takes another route. Drawing on a career spanning global fashion and surf, her mixed-media embroidery on canvas pairs a restrained palette and folk-art sensibility with animals, mythology, tattoo and religious iconography, punctuated by a distinctly sarcastic Australian point of view.
One bites. The other smirks. Together, EAT THE ELITE asks, what if the art world belonged to everyone?
