Experience an extraordinary evening where Hindustani and Western classical traditions meet, overlap, and transform one another. This intimate concert brings together the rhythmic intricacy and improvisational tradition of Indian classical music with the rich harmonic language, instrumental colors, and compositional traditions of Western classical music. The evening opens with a traditional tabla ensemble led by Anil Prasad, bringing the intricate rhythms and improvisational spirit of Hindustani music to the forefront. From there, the traditions begin to intertwine in Terry Riley’s SwarAmant for tabla, guitar, and violin—a mesmerizing work that explores the meeting point between Indian and Western musical languages.
The concert culminates in Reena Esmail’s My Sister’s Voice, a powerful work that brings Hindustani and Western vocal traditions together. Featuring Hindustani singer Sanika Joshi and soprano Ivy Zhou, the piece creates a striking musical dialogue between two voices and two traditions, revealing the ways they can complement, challenge, and deepen one another.
A celebration of musical connection, cultural exchange, and the extraordinary possibilities that emerge when traditions meet.
