Fairfield to Host “E-Bikes, Safe Streets, and Shared Responsibility: A Community Conversation” on October 1Community Event Brings First Responders, Medical Professionals, Safety Advocates and Bike Experts Together
The Fairfield Safe Streets Alliance will host an E-Bike Safety Panel on Thursday, October 1, bringing together police and fire first responders, emergency room physicians, safety professionals and local cycling experts to provide practical information about riding e-bikes safely and sharing the road.
The program will feature remarks from Fairfield Police Sergeant Michael Komm and Emergency Room Physician Douglas Latham, M.D., who will share perspectives on roadway safety, injury prevention, and what riders and drivers should know to help prevent crashes and serious injuries.
Their presentations will be followed by “The Personal Story: When a Crash Happens to You,” a brief conversation with bicyclist and crash survivor John Bysiewicz and his wife, Jenny Glass. The couple will share their personal experience with a bicycle crash and what they want other riders, drivers, and families to know about bicycle safety.
The community event is designed for riders of all ages—including children and teens—as well as parents, drivers, and anyone who shares Fairfield’s roads and sidewalks with bicyclists and e-bike riders.
“E-bikes have become an increasing popular way to get around town; especially amongst our teens, many of whom may not understand the rules of the road. We continue to hear from residents who are concerned about the safety not only of the riders but of others on the road. There is a shared responsibility to make sure everyone understands how to ride, drive and interact safely on our roads,” said First Selectperson Christine Vitale. “This community conversation is an opportunity to ask questions, learn from professionals who are on the front line of consequences when safety rules aren’t followed, and get practical information that families can use to keep themselves and their children safe.”
Following the panel, there will be public question and answer session. Attendees will then have an opportunity to visit informational tables for one-on-one conversations and hands-on resources with representatives from the Fairfield Police Department, Fairfield Fire Department, Fairfield Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee, the Bridgeport Hospital Injury Prevention Team, Pediatric Healthcare Associates, Cycle Dynamics, and the Fairfield Health Department.
The Town encourages residents to attend whether they currently ride an e-bike, are considering purchasing one, have children or teenagers who ride, or simply want to better understand how everyone can safely share the road.
