About this Event
Día de Muertos is a Mexican tradition of honoring the dead rooted in Aztec rituals surrounding the days when the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead is believed to be thinnest. We'll be celebrating this year on November 1st, known as All Saints Day, with the Tampa Bay return of Mark Farina for an especially intimate day into night extended Mushroom Jazz set (all night — 6 hours) at the homely Suite E Studios located in St. Pete's Warehouse Arts District.
The event will also feature a community altar art installation for ofrendas to honor loved ones no longer with us, traditional Catrina (sugar skull) face painting available, and food popup offering calabaza en tacha (candied pumpkin).
Mark Farina (Mushroom Jazz — Extended All Night Set)
Believing that the dead are still part of the community, kept alive by memory, the Day of the Dead is an opportunity to celebrate our deceased loved ones. Mushrooms, as nature's ultimate recycler embodying the profound ecological cycle of renewal, mirrors this philosophy, where death is not viewed as a tragic end, but as a natural phase in the continuous circle of life. Indigenous Mesoamerican peoples historically engaged in practices, dating back thousands of years ago, where mushrooms were used in spiritual and divinatory rituals, with the Aztecs referring to them as teonanácatl in Nahuatl, meaning "divine mushroom" or "flesh of the gods."
