Some hikes are about reaching the top. This one is about who we carry with us along the way.Join The 5 AM Crew on Sunday, November 1 for a special Día de los Muertos Memorial Sunrise Hike through Griffith Park to Mount Hollywood.
This event is open to everyone. You do not need to be a member of the 5 AM Crew, and there is no charge to join the hike.
ABOUT THE HIKE
Día de los Muertos is a tradition centered around remembering, honoring and celebrating loved ones who have died. For this hike, we’re bringing that spirit of remembrance to something our community already loves doing together: hiking before sunrise.
We’re asking everyone to bring a printed photo of someone they would like to dedicate their hike to.
We’ll begin together in the darkness, hike approximately 6 miles round trip through Griffith Park, and make our way to Mount Hollywood as the sun begins to rise over Los Angeles.
At the top, we’ll take some time to remember the people we brought with us through their photographs and stories. Bring some coffee, pan dulce, pan de muerto or something small to share with the community if you’d like.
Sharing your story is completely optional. Sometimes simply carrying someone’s photograph to the top is enough.
WHO IS THE 5 AM CREW?
The 5 AM Crew is a Los Angeles hiking community built around connection, consistency and showing up for one another.
What began as people meeting before sunrise has grown into a community of hikers who regularly meet at Griffith Park and throughout Southern California for sunrise hikes, challenging mountain adventures, training hikes, cleanups, community gatherings and special events.
Our regular Griffith Park hikes happen at 5 AM because we believe there is something powerful about starting the day together, watching Los Angeles wake up from the mountains and creating real human connection along the way.
Our motto is simple:

Whether this is your first hike with us or you’ve been hiking with us for years, you are welcome.

Meet: 5:00 AM
Hike begins: 5:15 AM SHARP
Expected return: Approximately 8:00 AM
Meeting location: Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round Parking Lot #1
Destination: Mount Hollywood
Distance: Approximately 6 miles round trip
Pace: Fast/moderate
Difficulty: Challenging
Please understand that although this is a community hike open to everyone, this particular route and pace are not recommended for first-time hikers. You should be comfortable hiking several miles, climbing hills and maintaining a steady pace with a group.
We hike as a team with a front leader and sweeper. Please arrive early enough to be completely ready before we begin.
WHAT TO BRING
Headlamp or flashlight — required
Hiking shoes with good traction
1 liter of water
Snacks
Any personal medication you may need
Layers appropriate for the morning weather
A printed photo of the person you’re hiking in memory of
Coffee, pan dulce, pan de muerto or something small to share, if you’d like
Dogs are welcome but must remain on leash and be capable of completing the hike safely.
Please respect Griffith Park, stay on established trails, pack out everything you bring and leave no trace.

Each shirt includes an “In Memory Of” area on the sleeve where you can write the name of the person you are dedicating your hike to.
