Join New Neighbors Coalition on Monday, November 2 at 6pm in the St. Luke’s Undercroft, for a community celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Día de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and areas of Central America through the end of October through November 2nd that honors the lives and memories of loved ones who have passed away. Rooted in Indigenous Mexican traditions and influenced by Catholic observances, the holiday remembers loved ones through colorful ofrendas (altars), food, art, and storytelling.
Together, we'll make conchas, a traditional Mexican sweet bread, decorate a community ofrenda, and participate in a Salsa dancing lesson. Please consider bringing a small memento of someone you would like to honor to contribute to the ofrenda. This could be a photograph, something that belonged to them, their favorite food/drink, or candle. We would love to create a big ofrenda of shared remembrance. The event will also feature a face painter, offering designs inspired by Día de los Muertos traditions.
This event is cultural and educational in nature and is open to everyone, regardless of background or tradition. Children are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Donations of $5-10 suggested to help offset cost of the event. However, money should not be a barrier, and all are welcome to attend regardless of ability to pay.
