Playback Theatre is an internationally practiced form of improvisational theatre in which real-life stories shared by participants or audience members are transformed into spontaneous theatrical performances. Guided by a conductor and brought to life by actors and musicians, these stories are reflected with creativity, empathy, and artistic integrity.
More than an improvisational form, Playback Theatre is a practice of deep listening, authentic presence, and collective creation. It offers a space where people feel seen and heard, fostering empathy, dialogue, and meaningful human connection.
Who is this training for?
This foundational training is designed for anyone wishing to discover Playback Theatre and learn its core principles.

No previous Playback Theatre experience is required.
Learning Objectives:
Throughout this intensive 30-hour training, participants will:
- Learn the philosophy, values, and ethics of Playback Theatre.
- Develop the fundamental skills of Playback improvisation.
- Explore the different Playback roles, including actor, conductor, and musician.
- Strengthen listening, spontaneity, creativity, and collaborative performance.
- Discover how personal stories can become meaningful artistic experiences.
The training combines theory, demonstrations, experiential learning, and extensive practical work in a supportive and respectful environment.
Attendance at all sessions is required to complete the Level 1 training.
The Playback Theatre School of Quebec is affiliated with the Centre for Playback Theatre in New York, founded by Jonathan Fox. Completion of this training is recognized throughout the international network of affiliated Playback Theatre schools.
Trainer:
Abdullah Jatal is a drama therapist, improviser, and Playback Theatre trainer with more than fifteen years of experience using theatre as a tool for personal growth, community building, and social transformation.
Throughout his career, he has performed in hundreds of Playback Theatre, improvisation, and Forum Theatre performances, while facilitating workshops and professional trainings across the Middle East and Canada.
He is the Co-Director of the Playback Theatre School of Quebec, Co-Founder of Quebec's first bilingual Playback Theatre troupe, and President of the International Theatresports Institute (ITI).
Abdullah pursues his PhD at Concordia University, where his research focuses on the use of drama therapy interventions to foster empathy, social cohesion, intercultural dialogue, and peaceful coexistence across diverse communities.
Drawing on extensive experience in community mental health, refugee support, leadership development, and arts-based education, Abdullah has trained performers, educators, therapists, and community leaders in Playback Theatre, improvisation, Theatre of the Oppressed, and drama therapy. His teaching integrates technical excellence with deep listening, creativity, and ethical practice, creating spaces where authentic stories become opportunities for connection, transformation, and collective learning.

Le Théâtre Playback est une forme de théâtre d'improvisation pratiquée partout dans le monde. Il permet de transformer des histoires vécues, racontées par les participant·e·s ou le public, en créations spontanées interprétées sur scène par une équipe composée d'un·e conducteur·trice, de comédien·ne·s et de musicien·ne·s.
Plus qu'une technique d'improvisation, le Théâtre Playback est une pratique d'écoute profonde, de présence et de création collective. Il favorise l'empathie, le dialogue et le sentiment d'appartenance en offrant un espace où chaque histoire peut être entendue, honorée et partagée.
À qui s'adresse cette formation?
Cette formation de base (Niveau 1) est destinée à toute personne souhaitant découvrir le Théâtre Playback et acquérir ses fondements.
Elle s'adresse notamment aux artistes, improvisateur·trice·s, intervenant·e·s psychosociaux, psychothérapeutes, enseignant·e·s, animateur·trice·s, musicien·ne·s ainsi qu'à toute personne intéressée par les approches créatives de communication et de développement humain.
Objectifs de la formation:
Au cours de cette formation intensive de 30 heures, les participant·e·s apprendront à :
• comprendre la philosophie, les valeurs et l'éthique du Théâtre Playback;
• développer les compétences de base en improvisation Playback;
• explorer les différents rôles : comédien·ne, conducteur·trice et musicien·ne;
• développer une écoute sensible, la spontanéité et la créativité collective;
• découvrir comment transformer les histoires personnelles en expériences artistiques porteuses de sens.
La formation alternera entre théorie, démonstrations et nombreuses mises en pratique.
La présence à l'ensemble des séances est requise afin de compléter la formation.
L'École de Théâtre Playback du Québec est affiliée au Centre for Playback Theatre (New York). Cette formation est reconnue par le réseau international des écoles affiliées.
Formateur:
Abdullah Jatal est dramathérapeute, improvisateur et formateur en Théâtre Playback. Depuis plus de quinze ans, il utilise le théâtre comme outil de développement personnel, d'intervention psychosociale et de transformation sociale.
Il a participé à des centaines de spectacles de Théâtre Playback, d'improvisation et de Théâtre Forum, en plus d'animer des formations et ateliers au Moyen-Orient et au Canada.
Il est cofondateur de la première troupe bilingue de Théâtre Playback au Québec, codirecteur de l'École de Théâtre Playback du Québec et président de l'International Theatresports Institute (ITI).
Abdullah poursuit son doctorat à l'Université Concordia, où ses recherches portent sur l'utilisation des interventions en dramathérapie pour favoriser l'empathie, la cohésion sociale, le dialogue interculturel et la coexistence pacifique.
