During the winter term of 2026/27, our discussion series will focus on the experiences of imperial rulers in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Central Eastern Europe and its culturally, socially and economically diverse populations have been subject to imperial rule – in the modern sense – since at least the late 18(th) century, experiencing the rise and fall of three continental imperial powers. Thus, our discussions will take a comparative look at what it meant to live under imperial rule. The first two meetings (in November and December) will focus on the relationship between imperial rule and 'worse' subjects, examining the relationships between national minorities and imperial authorities in peripheral regions such as Poznań and the Baltic countries, as well as the radicalisation of national independence movements in Poland and Finland.
The final discussion will take a broader historical perspective, examining the relationship between imperial rulers and 'modes' of empire at the end of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
