Discover how 19th-century Edinburgh revealed the link between workplace dust and lung disease in miners and stonemasons.
About this Event

In celebration of National Pathology Week, join Professor Ken Donaldson, Surgeons’ Hall Museums Senior Research Fellow, and practising pathologist Edmund Joseph as they uncover the stories of two occupational lung diseases in 19th-century Edinburgh. From the coal-blackened lungs of miner John Hogg to the stonemasons who built Edinburgh’s New Town, discover how pioneering observations helped reveal the deadly connection between dust, occupation and lung disease and transformed our understanding of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis and silicosis.
