Barbara and Neil Duncan volunteered to host our annual picnic in their beautiful garden in Connecticut. The farmhouse and gardens are on the last two acres of a 1670 land grant of 400 acres from the King to Captain John Morgan, an army engineer from South Wales. The farmhouse, one of the first four built in Ledyard, was moved to its present location in 1784. The stone walls throughout the property attest to its agricultural past. The bones of the present garden were laid out during 1980s, but by the time the Duncans purchased the property in 2003 much of the plantings were overgrown, in poor condition, and full of invasives. There were many large trees, but most of them were overcrowded. Since 2003 the Duncans have removed the vast majority of the trees and plants they inherited to allow them to start anew. Some relics of the former plantings, mainly the hostas and the perennials, were retained.
Over the years they have become collectors of hostas, perennials, shrubs and ornamental trees, many of which are rare or unusual, and they also have collections of dwarf maples, ginkos, redbuds and conifers, as well as hydrangeas, mountain laurels, peonies, magnolias, and of course hostas throughout the gardens.
