Learn the traditional Djembe drumming style and rhythms from West-Africa, and connect with the spirit of this old instrument.Join Catur Hari Wijaya & Ania Wijaya for this special drumming workshop starting on Monday, November 23.
✓ Learn one traditional West African celebratory rhythm on the Djembe, exploring all its different parts and how they come together as a complete song.
✓ Develop technical skills such as hand coordination, tone colour, timing and tempo through hands-on practice.
✓ Explore the cultural roots and musical language behind the rhythm, deepening your understanding of this ancient tradition. Understanding the past and what transcends it is the key to deeply connect with the spirit of Djembe.
✓ At the end of the workshop, bring everything together by playing the full song as a group, with the opportunity to perform it together at a legendary open mic in Ubud. Music is not meant to be kept in a classroom. It is meant to be shared with the community. Especially traditional Djembe music.
The sessions run in 4 classes of 2 hours.

About the teacher:
Catur Hari Wijaya is a dynamic world musician, multi-instrumentalist and drum teacher based in Ubud. He plays more than 20 instruments such as strings and flutes. However, percussions became Catur's main instruments when he fell in love with Djembe in 2005. During his life, Catur had the chance to study traditional music with great masters such as Mady Keita, Boubacar Gaye, Mohammed Bangoura, M'bemba Bangoura and Bassidi Kone. In 2018, Catur visited Mali in West Africa, to deepen his musical knowledge and to experience the traditional context of drumming in the motherland of Djembe.
Catur is passionate about uniting ancient music heritages, regularly composing and performing works that draw upon traditions from West Africa, India and Indonesia. Catur performs at major festivals around the Indonesian archipelago and is very active on the musical scene in Bali both as a teacher and a performer.
