“Five Centuries of Women Composers Works for Intermediate and Early Advanced Pianists”This session will introduce piano literature for intermediate to early advanced students from the Baroque period through the Contemporary era. Women composers featured in this presentation include Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Anna Bon, Clara Schumann, Lili Boulanger, Sofia Gubaidulina, Tania León, and Alexina Louie.
Through brief introductions to each composer and discussion of their musical language, participants will have the opportunity to listen to selected excerpts and become familiar with a variety of pedagogically valuable works suitable for intermediate to early-advanced students. The presentation will highlight repertoire that broadens the traditional piano canon while remaining accessible for study and performance. By the end of the session, attendees will leave with a curated list of works by these composers, along with practical ideas for incorporating this repertoire into their teaching and programming.
Bio
Helena Hyesoo Kim, a Korean-Canadian pianist, has been praised for her “keys that dance around the frisky saw prowess in animated ways” (Take Effect). Her performances have taken her to major venues across North America, Europe, and Asia, including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and Severance Hall. She has appeared as a soloist with the Chopin Poland Orchestra and has received prizes in national and international competitions, including First Prize at the Han Kuk Ilbo Competition and the Russian Music Festival.
An advocate for underrepresented composers, Kim is particularly committed to championing the music of women composers through performance, research, and teaching. Her doctoral research examined the piano sonatas of Galina Ustvolskaya, whose works were marginalized during the Soviet era. She has collaborated with artists including soprano Sumi Jo and trumpeter Jens Lindemann.
Kim holds degrees from McGill University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and currently serves on the faculty of the University of Missouri, where she teaches piano, musicianship, and career development for musicians.
