Dovetail Orchestra has been shining light on lost silent cinema gems since 2018, and Halloween is always a time to celebrate live music with old treasures. This year, for one night only, it's 1927's The Cat and the Canary. Directed by Paul Leni, the notable German expressionist filmmaker behind Waxworks, The Man Who Laughs and The Last Warning. Back in the day, horror films were often tinged with comedic elements, and this film toes that line masterfully. It popularized the "old dark house" template that continues to this day, as well as greedy descendants learning who their uncle left his riches to, moving bookcases, scary hands reaching out of nowhere and was one of the first films to utilize hand-held camera shots for dramatic effect. https://www.goelevent.com/JeanCocteau/e/TheCatandtheCanary
