Please join us for a double book launch at Kingston's Novel Idea Bookstore at 7 pm on October 27! Barachois, the debut poetry collection by the late Cynthia French and Skin Hunger the debut novel by Frances Boyle. The poems in Barachois begin with sharply-drawn vignettes from French’s childhood and teen years in St.
John’s, NL. She describes meeting and marrying the love of her life, beginning their family, and eventually settling in Nova Scotia. This could be the story of anyone, but few could distill the keen moments as she has done, using only the right words and none of the wrong. In the foreword, acclaimed Canadian poet and professor, Don McKay calls Cynthia “one hell of a fine poet.”
Cynthia died suddenly of cancer in mid-2023, still seeking a publisher for her collection. Askance Publishing since took it on and this reading celebrates its publication. Guest readers include Elizabeth Greene, Frances Boyle, Claudia Radmore and Rebecca Luce-Kapler
Frances Boyle’s debut novel is Skin Hunger, published by Guernica Editions. It tells two stories in counterpoint: the story of Rowan, a young activist who crusades for animal liberation tocompensate for a dearth of emotional comfort and physical connection, and that of Evie, Rowan’s mother, whose struggles with mental illness and substance abuse have long kept the family apart. Boyle is also the author of Seeking Shade, short stories, Tower, a Rapunzel-channelling novella, and three well-received poetry collections. Raised in Saskatchewan, Frances has long lived in Ottawa.
