Sam Wilson and Ally Fiola have both released original jazz albums this fall, and will be celebrating in Halifax with a joined show!Sam Wilson’s “Sowing Spring”
Following Wintertides (2024) as a second seasonal place-based album, Sowing Spring is dedicated to the melting Magaguadavic River in New Brunswick, Canada. The album’s material arose from a week-long residency along its banks, during which Sam witnessed its complete transformation from ice to water during fool's spring. Blending finger-style guitar with the vastness of jazz composition, Sam incorporates elements of folk, chamber music, and pastoral jazz to evoke wild spaces and the stunning metamorphoses of seasonal landscapes.
Ally Fiola’s “Exit 10”
Ally's recent 2026 record, Exit 10, is a jazz concept album that celebrates her roots in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia, where each song is titled after an important location to her growing up. A nostalgic narrative is woven through the fusion of Ally's unique groove-jazz sound with elements of the East Coast music tradition.
“Exit 10 is worth lingering over not only because of the strength of its compositions, the precision of its arrangements, and the sheer pleasure of its grooves, but because of what it reveals about the relationship between an artist and the world that shaped them” (Thierry De Clemensat).
