From the sudden appearance of an angel to the frozen landscapes of northern Europe, from the warmth of Victorian festivities to the battlefields of the First World War, artists have found inspiration in Christmas in some remarkable and unexpected ways.
Drawing on works with clear Christmas associations alongside some more surprising choices, this illustrated lecture explores familiar traditions and celebrations, but also themes of hardship, generosity, faith, and human experience. Looking beyond the surface of the artworks, it reveals the stories, symbolism and social commentary that give these images their meaning, offering a fresh and sometimes unexpected perspective on Christmas in art.
Speaker: Dr. Conny Bailey
