Don't Be So Political: FANTASTIC MR. FOX (2009)

Don’t Be So Political is a monthly film series that engages with films through a political lens. Each screening is preceded by an expert Q&A. Hosted by Zach Wortzman

“I think it may very well be all the beautiful differences among us that might just give us the tiniest glimmer of a chance.”

Reverting to his life of banditry to stick it to three big bad farmers, Mr. Fox has to save a forest full of woodland critters from that trio of vengeful agriculturalists.

In his inimitable style, Wes Anderson plays puppet master with a forest full of colourful characters. Painting this time with an autumnal palette, Anderson and co-writer Noah Baumbach’s dialogue snaps back and forth like so many twigs under a bulldozer. Part heist film, part family dramedy, Fantastic Mr. Fox is fast-paced, highly quotable, and full of heart. Populated with richly conceived sets and equally immersive and impressive stop-motion, the film retains a handmade feel throughout. Top flight voice acting from a star studded cast, a performance by Willem Dafoe as Rat is a standout. And a game called whackball that replicates the experience of trying to explain baseball to someone for the first time.

An allegory for class divisions as well as a decrying of industrialized farming and its environmental impact, Fantastic Mr. Fox suggests an intersectionality between economic status, environmental well-being, and criminal activity. Also, there’s a lot of cute animals. Unfortunately, those animals homes are threatened and destroyed by big business, devouring nature to protect their balance sheet. In the film, the animals are able to fight back and defend themselves. In reality, it is up to us.
