About this Event
This event is open to staff/students from UCL, Birkbeck, SOAS (and other universities in London) – IMPORTANT: if you are an external attendee, please bring along your university student or staff ID!
Dr Elvis Imafidon (SOAS) is a Reader in African Philosophy, Chair of the Centre for Global Comparative Philosophies, and Head of the School of History, Religions and Philosophies at SOAS. In this lecture, he will present his work related to his recently published monograph, titled “Doing African Philosophy: Beyond Textuality and Individual Authorship” (Bloomsbury, 2026). Dr Imafidon will discuss the relationship between textuality, individual authorship, and philosophy. In particular, how such features were used to delegitimatise African philosophical practices. In this insightful lecture, he redefines the philosophical tradition, and seeks a way to liberate forms of African knowledge.
This event will consist of a lecture, followed by a short break, then a Q/A session. A quick heads up: the lecture will be recorded to allow those who cannot attend an opportunity to view it, if they so wish. Hopefully, refreshments should be provided as well. We are really excited for this lecture, see you on the 13th of March (4-6pm) at E28 Harrie Massey LT, Gordon Street (25)!
P.S.: For any accessibility requirements, please feel free to email us at [email protected] so we can make appropriate arrangements to support your participation! If you cannot attend and want to, please also email us so we can see about getting the edited recording to you, when we can. Additionally, for any dietary or drink requirements, feel free to email us also.
