By Dr. Paul L. Gavrilyuk, Inaugural Michael Huffington Chair of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, University of OxfordFor many Orthodox Christians, the answer to this question is an obvious “no.” However, two recent developments suggest that such an answer is perhaps overly dismissive. First, an attempt by the Orthodox churches to convene a pan-Orthodox council was fraught with complications, demonstrating the fragility of global Orthodox synodality in the absence of the emperor or the pope. Second, the Catholic Church recently organized a series of assemblies intended to discuss and practice synodality at different levels. Arguably, this experience could prove valuable for the Orthodox churches, too. Has the time arrived for a shared, if distinct understanding of the papal primacy by the Orthodox and Catholic Christians? The lecture will propose a way forward in the search for a common understanding of papal authority, which remains the main obstacle to Catholic-Orthodox unity.
