PUNK THE CAPITAL: BUILDING A SOUND MOVEMENT explores how in the late 1970s, in conservative Washington, DC the music of anarchy clashed against the establishment. Banned from playing shows, bands took their gigs underground and would bounce from one basement to the next. Uniting against the authorities gave birth to a movement that redefined music and inspired art and politics forever.
Some of the era's biggest bands say the DC punk scene is the core reason behind their existence; Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Teen Idles, The Slickee Boys, Faith, The Nurses, Enzymes and Chalk Circle are just a few of the bands that spawned from DC during this time.
The documentary has collected over 100 interviews for the film, including insight on the DC harDCore scene from legends Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye and rare, never-before-seen Super-8 footage.
Join us for a special online screening of the film, which you can watch for 48 hours from May 17th at 7pm! As always with our Doc Nights screenings, we have a very cool Q&A hosted by our friend Estella Adeyeri (Big Joanie), featuring film directors James June Schneider & Paul Bishow.
