About this Event
Join Us for a Practical Monitoring Site Visit on Holne Moor
DLUMG is working with Professor Robin Pakeman of the James Hutton Institute to review how well Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) works on Dartmoor—and to help develop a practical, land‑manager‑friendly monitoring approach that can sit alongside it.
CSM is widely used across the UK and is simple to carry out, but at the scale of individual commons it can miss the finer changes that matter for day‑to‑day grazing and management decisions. This project aims to build something more sensitive, more useful, and more grounded in local knowledge.
Meet Robin on Dartmoor: 17–19 November
Robin will be on Dartmoor from Tuesday 17 to Thursday 19 November, and we’re running three site visits across different commons and habitats. These sessions are a chance to:
- Walk the ground with Robin and trial the emerging practical monitoring framework
- Share your experience of vegetation change, grazing patterns and local conditions
- Help shape a monitoring approach that genuinely works for farmers, commoners, land managers and project officers
We’re also hosting an evening workshop at Plume of Feathers, Princetown on Wed 18th at 7.00pm for anyone who prefers a discussion‑based session rather than a field visit.
Tuesday 17 November @ 14:00hr - Row Tor Car Park, Okehampton
Wednesday 18 November @ 11:00am Newbridge Hill Car Park, Spitchwick
Thursday 19 November @ 11:00am - Quarry Car Park, Holne Moor
Why come along?
Your knowledge of Dartmoor’s vegetation and management is essential. These events are designed to be hands‑on, practical and relevant, giving you the chance to influence how monitoring is done in future—and ensuring it supports real‑world decision making on the commons.
All events are free to attend and open to farmers, commoners, land managers, project officers and anyone involved in Dartmoor’s upland management.
